The Snowman Vs. the Cops

There’s a rumor on the internet that this photo of longtime MMA heavyweight and avowed anarchist Jeff “The Snowman” Monson squaring off with members of the St. Paul Police Department is actually a picture of Monson conducting a grappling clinic for members of the St. Paul Police Department. To Monson, the rumor is ridiculous, not only because he was there, outside the Target Center during the 2008 Republican National Convention, when the picture was taken but also because police don’t show up for grappling lessons in full riot gear. Also, if you look closely, you can see the cop in the middle has his hand on his Taser, another thing police in seminars don’t do. Monson says the cop was ready to use it, too.

“We were basically blockading the street,” Monson remembers. “And when the busloads of Republican delegates were being unloaded we just wanted to prevent them from going in the Target Center, basically making a human wall. The riot police swept us up and pushed us into a park and then arrested us for a) trespassing, which was strange because we were on a public street, and b) inciting a riot, which was strange because there wasn’t any riot. They had arrested the group of us and I was coming up to the front saying, ‘I’m coming through; you can arrest me.’ I was confronted by the cops saying, ‘No, you’re not coming through.’ I was saying, ‘What right do you have? There’s nobody here rioting. It’s peaceful. Nobody’s throwing rocks, nobody’s doing anything.’ They said, ‘You’re threatening us,’ and I said, ‘How am I threatening you? I’m unarmed. I’m in a tank top. We don’t have any weapons. We’re not doing anything.’ And I said, ‘How can we be trespassing? These delegates have no more right—it’s a public street. How can they walk on the street and we can’t walk on the street?’ That’s when the one police officer put his hand on his Taser and said he was going to Tase me if I tried to go through. I said, ‘It’s not going to look very good if I’m just talking to you and you just Taser me because there are a lot of people with cameras filming everything.’ Literally at that moment, one of the guys got a call on his cell phone saying everyone’s released. Basically, they arrested us long enough for the delegates to get off the bus and get into the Target Center, and then they said, ‘We’re dropping the charges. You guys can go.’”

In the spirit of ideological accuracy, it needs to be mentioned that Monson is really more of an anarchist/socialist than a pure anarchist. Don’t be fooled by the criminal mischief charge he picked up in 2009 for spray-painting an anarchy symbol on the Washington State Capitol in Olympia. He’s a card-carrying member of the International Workers of the World, otherwise known as the Wobblies. Following his loss last November to Fedor Emelianenko, Monson met with anti-fascist groups in Russia and Poland that were made up of anarchists, socialists, and anyone else uncomfortable with the rise of racist nationalism in those countries. One of the dozens of tattoos he has is the hammer and sickle. Unlike most people in the anarchy movement, he sees some value in the state.

“In constant motion and with several combinations of different moves, Ginastica Natural is based on Jiu-Jitsu ground movement, strength exercises using the body’s own weight, and dynamic stretching and breathing techniques. There are hundreds of movements, with different class plans every day. It is a complete body of work that develops physical qualities like strength, flexibility, coordination, among others, and through breathing techniques provides the practitioner with great progress in mental and motor control.”

The Wrestler's Body

This is a study of wrestling as a system of meaning, and it must be made clear at the outset that I have not undertaken to study the technical aspects of the sport. Those who look for a detailed explication of moves, countermoves, and techniques will undoubtedly be disappointed. The reason for this is quite simple. The moves, countermoves, and techniques of Indian wrestling must be filmed or photographed to be appreciated and understood fully. This monograph is not an exercise in replication or description of this exact sort; it is a work of interpretation—to adapt an old adage, 1001 words offered in place of what would otherwise be a mere picture.

Free ebook at www.escholarship.org

Deck of Cards Workout

For this you need a deck of cards, it’s a simple way of training but you’re guaranteed a different workout everytime.

All you have to do is to assign an exercise to either each suit or colour of cards then shuffle the deck and get started. Simply pick the top card off the pack, the colour or suit corresponds to the exercise and the value of the card corresponds to the number of repetitions of that exercise. It is optional to keep the joker in the pack (usually assigned a value of 20), all kings/queens/jokers are given a value of 10, the ace is 1.

If you keep the jokers in the pack it will be 105 repatitions of each exercise if you assign a suit to each exercise, or 210 if you assign a colour to each exercise.

Here are two examples of workouts :

Black : Press Up / Red : Boot strapper

Hearts : Chin-up / Diamonds : Hindu Squat / Spades : Reverse Press-up / Clubs : Knee-raise

// via combatfitness.co.uk //

Indian workout

Indian workout

Gimnastica natural reloaded

A basic principle that I always try to implement with my athletes is something I call strength with movement.

Working bucket circles properly, helps teach athletes to maximize their strength from the hips to the shoulders. You’ll feel a complete workout in the abdominal area and entire trunk, deltoids, latissimus dorsi (lats), trapezius, pectorals, and rhomboids.

Remember, in order to properly execute a bucket circles, you have to work the exact muscle groups necessary to maintain the correct body “shape” required to successfully execute these circles. Not only are you trying to coordinate several circles, you’re trying not to fall down.

You’re essentially balanced on two arms (and briefly on one arm) while circling your entire body around your hands. This, in itself, requires a lot of strength and muscular stamina. This strength with movement exercise is great for total body strength coordination.

By this I mean, you’re coordinating the large muscle groups (lats, pecs, traps, delts, “core,” etc.) with the hundreds of smaller, even more important, muscles that exist that wouldn’t otherwise be used by conventional strength exercises.

The Muscle-up is an explosive pull up straight into a dip, often performed on bars, beams, rings. In order to do muscle ups, you must first be able to do at least ten or fifteen pull ups. You must also have the patience and determination required to master the technique. For most people, it takes some practice to get a feel for the coordination and timing required to do a muscle up.

Adolescent Kenyan Running Barefoot - Slow Motion

Adolescent Kenyan Running Barefoot - Slow Motion

How to treat cauliflower ear

A common occurrence once you’ve begun grappling is to one day realize a burning sensation in your ears and possibly the beginnings of a swelling. This swelling can grow into a fluid filled sac, which can be painful and unsightly.

Over time this sac will harden into a permanent disfigurement, known as cauliflower ear.

For the most part cauliflower ear doesn’t just suddenly appear. It usually comes after your ear is sore from training. If you notice your ears getting sore, take a break.

If it does blow up, go to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) medical specialist and have them drain it for you.

After draining the ear get some SAM splint, which is a spongy material backed by a thin layer of bendable metal. Pinch a piece of SAM splint around the affected ear as tightly as you can stand it. This will keep the ear from filling back up with fluid.

Photo
